San Luis Obispo from the Air
San Luis Obispo is located about half way between San Francisco and Los Angeles on Highway 101 or the Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 1). It is a region that would be a farming region except for the fact that there are a lot of tourists. San Luis Obispo is also home to Cal Poly University. The town’s population is 44,000. There are also a number of other interesting communities around San Luis Obispo. Cambria, near Hearst Castle, is a well-known and dog-friendly destination. Also well-known and dog-friendly are Pismo Beach, Morro Bay and Paso Robles which lies on Highway 101 to the north of San Luis Obispo. You and your dog can find a lot to do in this region.

The most well-known hotel in San Luis Obispo is the Madonna Inn, known for it’s multiple theme rooms. This hotel is not dog-friendly, unfortunately. There are other dog-friendly hotels. However, the Best Western El Rancho hotel is and offers a nice base of operations if visiting San Luis Obispo. For dog-friendly delight the Cambria Shores Inn in Cambria and the Las Serena Inn in Morro Bay will welcome your dog to their establishments. Also pet-friendly are the Cayucos Beach Inn in Cayucos, the SeaCrest OceanFront Hotel in Pismo Beach and the Morro Bay Sandpiper Inn. If you are looking for a dog-friendly vacation rental then try the Big Red House in Cambria or Central Coast Getaways for homes in the area. If you are camping in a Motorhome or travel trailer then consider the Pacific Dunes RV Resort of the Pismo Coast Village RV Park located right on the dog-friendly and car-friendly Pismo State Beach.

You can take your dog to a number of area vineyards or wineries if you would like to do wine tasting. The Changala Winery, Chumeia Vineyards, Tablas Creek Vineyard and Venteaux Vineyards are dog-friendly. Other attractions to take your dog to include the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden and Lake Lopez Boat Rentals. There are a number of dog-friendly beaches in the area. Pismo Beach State Beach, the Cambria beaches, Cayucos State Beach and the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Rec Area are some of the dog-friendly beaches. If you want to shop with your dog you can find dog-friendly stores and patio restaurants at the downtown shops in San Luis Obispo and Cambria and the Pismo Beach Premium Outlets.

Dog-Friendly restaurants are available throughout the San Luis Obispo region. Tognazzini’s Dockside Too in Morro Bay specializes in seafood and is located right on the water. Big Bubba’s BBQ and Good Ol’ Burgers of Paso Robles have dog-friendly patios. There are also quite a few additional dog-friendly restaurants in Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo and Pismo Beach. See DogFriendly.com’s directory for additional choices.

For off-leash fun there are a number of off-leash dog parks in the San Luis Obispo area. Heimann Dog Park in Atascadero, Cambria Dog Park in Cambria and Nipomo Park Off-Leash Area are some of these dog parks. There is also hiking with leashed dogs at Lake Lopez Rec Area, santa Margarita Lake Regional Park and Lake Nacimiento in Paso Robles.

Visitors with dogs to San Luis Obispo might consider a one hour trip south on Highway 101 to Solvang, a transplanted Dutch Village with delicous foods, neat shops and a great walking village.

Colorado Jeep Tours, located in the Royal Gorge region of Canon City, Colorado, is pleased to announce their new dog-friendly guided jeep tour policy, effective April, 2017. As more travelers are choosing to take their four-legged family members along on vacations, Colorado Jeep Tours has recognized the need to allow dogs onboard their off-road scenic guided tours. Now, with some exceptions and specific rules in place to insure the safety and enjoyment of all guests, dogs of all sizes and breeds – from tiny purse pups to giant breeds – will be allowed to ride along on excursions to the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park, Red Canyon Park, and the Gold Belt Scenic Byway, an all-day adventure that travels to the historic gold mining towns of Cripple Creek and Victor, Colorado.
In order to participate in the tours, advance reservations are required (making note of the dog), along with a pre-tour signed Dog Waiver, and a day-of-tour clearance from the Colorado Jeep Tours guide and/or management. There is no fee for lap-held dogs on tour but, due to limited space in the jeeps, large dogs that cannot be held safely by the owner will be assessed a seat fee. For safety reasons, dogs may only participate in the jeeping portion of any combination tours, and cannot be taken into partner businesses (i.e. train rides, horseback riding, ranch chuckwagons, etc) unless those venues specifically permit dogs.
Colorado Jeep Tours offers high-quality, scenic, and educational tours, providing local information on such topics as history, geology, and paleontology while traveling on some of the most beautiful roads and trails in the Royal Gorge region of Fremont County, Colorado. For more information, visit ColoradoJeepTours.com and click “Download Dog Waiver” in the black box at the bottom of any page, or call the Colorado Jeep Tours reservations at office at 719-275-6339.

The actual population of Big Bear is 5,000 people, however, over 100,000 may be here on some weekends per year. Big Bear Lake is located at 6,752 foot elevation which explains it winter snow and mild summers. Big Bear City is the center of commerce on Big Bear Lake but many of the resorts and activities are surrounding the lake at other areas.
