I have lived in Downtown Portland for 2 years with my 3 year old Border Collie. Until recently Portland was an amazing place for a well-behaved dog. We would play soccer, frisbee, and he would fetch tennis balls down at the waterfront! Not anymore, they have cracked down hard on anyone with a dog off-lease in this area, too bad they don't do something about the population of NON-migratory Canadian Geese that have turned the grand lawn into a fecal land-mine field.

Now, instead of walking him, we need to jump in the car and travel 15-20 minutes to a designated off-leash area that is a joke compared to the beauty Portland, Oregon and the area has to offer, so now mushroom hunting and surfing are the only safe spots away from the rangers where he can get sufficient exercise.

Portland, Oregon is a much more TOY dog friendly city, but that is the trade-off for having an working breed in the city, challenges everyday to keep them happy.

A Gold Coast Australia Couple is challenging the Queensland ban on dogs at outdoor patios. New South Wales (NSW) and Melbourne allow dogs at patios, most of the United States does, and Europe allows dogs even inside restaurants without negative health effects. Australia, over the years, has lagged behind others. But things are changing.

How about St. Petersburg/Clearwater, Florida? I take my Aussie with me everywhere. She's even welcome in some bars. In fact, the only two places I go to often that wont let her in is the grocery store and the gym. I can think of three dog beaches off the top of my head, two of which are in State Parks (Fort DeSoto, Honeymoon Isle). There's lots of large, maintained, leash-free dog parks, most with 'Big/Small' Dog zones, water fountains, gratis poop bags. Friendly to Pitts as well. Only breed rule I've seen enforced is greyhounds have to be muzzled at dog parks for 6 months after they have left the track.

Also, I grew up in Manhattan, and that is no place for dogs. Central Park Rangers are boorish and restrictive. What is the criteria for this list?
