Wow I am looking to move and am really bummed about all these on leash rules! I currently live in Jackson, WY and can't imagine how crazy my giant Lab would become without his hour plus running free in the National forest, Dog Park, river walk. Or bike riding leash free. You just train your pup a great heel and recall what is going on with this leash stuff poor dogs out there and what to do I want to move to GA?

What a great read. It's so hard to find pet friendly hotels and resorts. I prefer to take my dog away with us, as she loves the outdoors so this list really is nice to have.

Susan, thank-you so much for posting this review of Bar Harbor. I'm considering moving to the area and I have three dogs. This review just made me so happy about my decision! We currently live in a big city that is NOT dog friendly and I feel like all they get to do is play in the back yard. They are even shutting down on places that allow you to sit with your dog OUTSIDE around here so I'm so excited about taking them to Bar Harbor where they will be welcome!

I do not think Asheville is among the most dog friendly places - maybe to visit but definitely not to live. I am repeatedly fined by Asheville because my dogs live 2 counties away and they do not want me to bring my dogs there to the Vet, unless they conform to Asheville City animal ordinances. Then they tell me that my dogs have to conform but they can not live in the city limits. Animal control here is a joke and all they want to do is confiscate animals and put them to sleep. I took my 4 month old sheepdog to the French Broad dog ark and he contracted Giardia from the nasty French Broad River. Why don't you ask the residents that live here how City Government operates - tehy are on a money getting scheme because the City has such a deficit.

My bear-ish Siberian husky and I spent Independence Day weekend in Bar Harbor, and it's crazy dog friendly. He's allowed in almost all of the stores, and he was allowed ON both the covered and open patio at the restaurant where we had dinner. We went on the Margaret Todd, a 150' four-masted schooner and hiked in Acadia National Park. Dogs are even allowed on the LL Bean free shuttles that transport you around the area. It was AWESOME!!!
