I agree with Mike. Why isn’t Asheville, NC on any of these top 10 lists? The Asheville page is also not featuring a lot of very good restaurants and hotels although it was still helpful for us. Asheville is unlike any place I’ve ever been when it comes to dog-friendliness. It’s just part of the culture there to include furry family members. We went there the past two summers. It’s also so much cooler temperature-wise. The weather is very pleasant during summer even when 50 miles away it’s 90 degrees.

Recently visited Augusta.GA my 8 month old shih tzu Sophie was limited in activities in the parks. No slides or fountains for the dogs and very park side walk where you walk your dog was very c,ose to busy street. This was one of three parks in that city, but advised safer of the three. Also, no pet friendly restaurants. Pulled dog bakery up on gps drove to location store out of business. Finally, we get to the hotels only four are pet friendly. I chose Candlewood Suites- its likes a mini apartment. Ask for suite w/seperate bbedroom. Cost $90.00 during week $84.00 weekend rate plus $25 pet fee. Keep in mind if you join the rewards plan you can usually neg a lower rate, plus earn point and you get water, soda cookies.dog biscuits upon checkin. They have a dog relieving station in back of hotel. The Candlewood Suite in VA and NC

We are in Key West at the moment. It seems that it is becoming less and less dog friendly. Many of the restaurants that were once dog friendly are no longer. We were told that recently restaurants have had to pay for a permit to allow dogs at outdoor tables. Several of the ones that were once dog friendly are no longer because they didn’t want to pay for the permit. Pound for pound, we think that our visit to St. Augustine/Jacksonville was better all around. Many dog friendly restaurants and LOTS of dog friendly beaches and trails. In Key West, there is a pathetic excuse for a dog beach.

I agree with Chattanooga being in the top ten dog-friendly resort areas in the U.S. Chattanooga has a wonderful riverfront with many dog-friendly parks. In the summer, free concerts downtown at NightFall (Miller Park) and Riverfront Nights (Ross’s Landing on the river) are all dog friendly. Most of the restaurants in the downtown area with patio dining are dog friendly and there are several off-leash dog parks in the area. As of August 7th, DOGood Chattanooga (Citizens for a Dog Friendly Chattanooga) working with Chattanooga Parks and Recreation offically opened the Walnut Street Bridge to dogs. Walnut Street Bridge is a downtown historic bridge that was saved from being torn down and turned into a pedestrian walkway over the Tennessee River. Even the famouse Chattanooga Choo-Choo hotel is now dog friendly!

We just got back from Yellowstone/Teton area and were very disappointed. While pets are allowed inside certain rooms, they were not allowed anywhere else in either park. Dogs were not allowed on any of the boardwalks or hiking trails. Dining was limited to eating out of take out containers at our cabin, because dogs were not allowed anywhere near the main lodge, even if you wanted to eat outside.

Dogs weren’t allowed at Devils Tower or Mt. Rushmore either.

The best place in Wyoming that was accomodating diners travelling with dogs was the Plains Hotel in Cheyenne. I regret that I didn’t get our server’s name, but he was fantastic. He brought the girls a water bowl and kept it filled with fresh water.

On a recent trip, we found Asheville, NC as one of the most dog loving friendly cities we have seen in the mid-south. Most establishements allow dogs on leashes, and almost all restaurants have outdoor tables where patrons with dogs can dine at ease. You see countless merchants with water dishes next to the front door as well. The part that is impressive is that it is more than a trick to entice shoppers, these folks genuinely like dogs. I encourage anyone going to Asheville to take “Rover” along.

I love dogfriendly.com. Just a comment about the honorable mention, Santa Fe. We were there with our doggie last September and were very disappointed. There are very few restaurants that allow dogs. When we were there, we found out that the city is becoming more and more restrictive about allowing pets at outdoor tables. We had a hard time finding decent restaurants to dine at. Also, we found that there weren’t a lot of fun activities in the area. To me, if I bother to travel to a destination, I want more than dog parks. We look for other dog-friendly attractions and Santa Fe just didn’t have them. My husband has a business trip to Santa Fe again this September, but my doggie and I are not coming along.

We agree with St. Augustine, Florida. Spent the day with both of our dog, first going to the beach (must keep dogs leashed and go where dogs are welcome, which is clearly marked) then the scenic boat trip, visited the Fountain of Youth, had wine tasting at San Sebastian Winery, ate dinner at historic O.C. White’s, all with dogs in tow. Just keep in mind that if parking on downtown streets, there is paid parking and the maximum is two hours per parking privilege purchase.
