There are more than 50 rides and attractions, and special events throughout the year, plus a whole lot more at what is the state’s largest water theme park. Dogs are allowed for no additional fee. They must be friendly, well mannered, under their owner’s control, leashed, and cleaned up after at all times. Dogs may not be left unattended at any time or left in vehicles. Dogs are not allowed in the water ride areas or most buildings; they are allowed throughout the rest of the park unless otherwise noted.

Top 200 Places: See a Famous Telescope in New Mexico

The VLA is one of the world’s premier astronomical radio observatories. It consists of 27 antennas arranged in a huge Y pattern up to 22 miles across. Dogs are not allowed in the visitor’s center, but you can take your pup on the self-guided walking tour. This is where part of the movie Contact, starring Jodie Foster, was filmed. The VLA is located 50 miles west of Socorro on U.S. Highway 60. From U.S. 60, turn South on NM 52, then West on the VLA access road, which is well marked. Signs will point you to the Visitor Center. The tour is free, but donations are welcome.

This park is an extension of the Michigan State University, and in addition to educational programs/exhibits, visitors can travel paths through the woods, by the lake, the arboretum, green open fields, a bonsai courtyard, a vibrant demonstration garden, and a beautiful hillside garden. Dogs of all sizes are allowed throughout the park on the pathways. Dogs must be under their owner’s control, leashed, and cleaned up after at all times.
