The Mill Creek Rotary and pet supply store, Paddywack, have partnered to organize a dog benefit walk in South Snohomish County. The 2011 Mutt March will take place at McCollum Park in South Everett on June 11th. The 5K walk begins in McCollum Park and follows the North Creek trail south to the Mill Creek Town Center, looping back to the park. The event activities extend beyond thewalk to offer entertainment and family fun, including demonstrations by Frisbee catchingFlying Disc Dogs, Seattle FlyDogs agility club and the Snohomish County Sheriff’s K9and Search & Rescue units. The schedule of events also includes pet photography, petrelated vendors and local pet rescue groups on “Adoption Alley”.
The Mutt March will raise money to provide funding to two worthy organizations, Chase Away K9 Cancer and The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Department Pennies for Puppies and Ponies program. According to Janet Berwick, Co-Director and owner of Paddywack in Mill Creek, “I am very excited to be involved with this event that benefits research for canine cancer, a cause near and dear to my heart”.
Cancer is the number one cause of death in dogs. One out of every three dogs will get cancer and 50% of those will die. Chase Away K9 Cancer works with The American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) Foundation and 100% of the funds raised by Chase supports canine cancer research. The ACVIM Foundation is a nonprofit organization that funds the work of specialists in veterinary medicine.
The other beneficiary, Pennies For Puppies and Ponies, is a 501c3 non-profit foundation dedicated to providing financial assistance and support to the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit, Mounted Patrol Unit, and the Volunteer Search and Rescue K9 Unit. According to Bill McElroy, President of the Mill Creek Rotary, “the money donated to this non-profit extension of the Sheriff’s department ensures that the vital programs and services provided by the K9 unit remain in our community.
