St. Louis is located at the intersection of the Mississippi River and the Missouri River. Long before the country had airports, highways or trains St. Louis was a crossroads city. Boats from the Missouri or Mississippi heading to the Gulf had to pass here. The city was founded in 1764 by a French trading company led by Pierre Laclede and Auguste Chouteau.The city joined the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. The city of St. Louis has a current population of about 320,000 but the region boasts 2.5 million residents. St Louis is dog-friendly and is the location of the American Kennel Clubs (AKC) Museum of the Dog.
