The area that is now Albuquerque was occupied by Natives hundreds of years before Europeans came to North America. Some of this history is on display at the Petroglyph National Monument just west of town. The city was named after the Spanish Duke of Alburquerque (the city later dropped the “r”). It was founded as a Spanish colony in 1706 and still has many of the buildings in Old Town that were built in the 1700s. As with most Spanish cities the city was built around a plaza and that plaza remains in Old Town Albuquerque. Albuquerque is very dog-friendly and has been ranked high on many dog-friendly lists in the past. It has very many dog-friendly hotels and has recently benefited from New Mexico passing a law clarifying that dogs may sit with you at patio restaurants. Thus there are more restaurants that are dog-friendly here than ever before.
