Black Hills of South Dakota – It’s worth the drive with your dog

When you think of the most pet-friendly states places like California, Oregon or Florida may come to mind. You may not think of South Dakota. However, the Black Hills Region of South Dakota takes a back seat to no one as far as a vacation paradise for your four legged friend. The main catch is it’s far from most places. If you are driving cross country on Interstate 90 you will pass right through the region. You should stop and spend a few days.

National Parks have a somewhat well-deserved reputation as not very dog-friendly. After all, there is a list of restrictions at most parks about where your dog can’t go. Usually it includes “all backcountry trails”, hiking trails, and major tourist sites. There are, however, some National Parks where this is not the case. Acadia National Park, in Bar Harbor, Maine is certainly one of the them.

You can be certain of few things always being true. One of those things is that Carmel California will rank at or very near the top of any national pet-friendly city list. It has been in DogFriendly.com’s Top 3 resort cities to visit with a dog every year, and has held the number one spot about half the time. Carmel is made for a vacation with a dog. It is not too hot, with moderate summertime temperatures and the ocean fog cooling things off. It is not too cold in winter, so you can do the outdoor activities that make up much of a great dog-friendly vacation. But if weather was the only factor, there could be lots of other places like Carmel. There are not.
