Houston is the largest city in Texas. Founded in 1836, the city was named for Texas General Sam Houston and served as the capital of the Texas Republic through 1839. After a channel was dug connecting the port of Houston to the Gulf of Mexico it became a major shippng center. The discovery of oil throughout Texas made the Port of Houston one of the largest in the world and the city grew by leaps and bounds. However, this growth was not orderly and the city did not follow much of a plan. It is hard to drive around and has much less public transportation than most larger cities. When visiting Houston with your dogs, be prepared to drive most places and be prepared for traffic.
