Mackinac Island
Accessible by ferry
Mackinac Island,
Michigan
800-454-5227

This island emerged gradually over 15,000 years ago. As the glaciers receded, the island rose above lake level and the erosive action of the ancient Great Lakes agains the island’s limestone bedrock created the many cliffs and rock formation that you can see today. The island is an American National Historic Landmark which was established in 1817. No cars are allowed on the island. Instead of car engines, you will hear horse hooves clip-clopping along the roads. For transportation you have a choice of walking, bicycling, horse and carriage or horseback riding. The majority of the island is owned by the park service and offers many dog-friendly hiking trails and picnic areas. The island offers a downtown area with dog-friendly hotels, vacation rentals, outdoor dining and scenic views. Also worth noting are the many fudge shops on the island and you can purchase fudge at stores and restaurants throughout downtown. The boardwalk, located west of the downtown area, offers the best spot for watching sunsets. This is also a popular walking area in the evening hours or for enjoying a picnic at one of the many picnic tables. In the late evening hours, the Northern Lights, also known as the aurora borealis, can often be seen year-round. To get to the island, you will need to take one of the three ferries, all of which allow leashed dogs.
