Top 200 Places: 200 Mile C&O Canal Towpath and Park

The 184 mile towpath extends all the way from Georgetown, in Washington, DC to Cumberland, MD. Dedicating to preserving and educating the public about the canal era and America’s transportation history, several visitor centers can be found along this 184 mile long canal trail. Dogs are allowed throughout the park and on the canal trail. Dogs must be under their owner’s control, leashed, and cleaned up after at all times.

Full service lodging is available here with a restaurant, lounge, hook-up and dry camping sites, hearty western style meals, a variety of fun activities and adventures, amenities for hunters, and various special events throughout the season. Dogs are allowed for an additional one time pet fee of $10.

Sully Creek State Park

A primitive 80 acre park in the heart of the badlands with campsites, vault toilets, canoeing, and corrals, Sully Creek also serves as a trailhead for the 120 mile long non-motorized Maah Daah Hey Trail. Dogs are allowed for no additional fee. They must be well behaved, kept in a secure enclosure or on a leash no more than 6 feet, and cleaned up after at all times. Dogs are not allowed in buildings, designated swim areas, playgrounds, or where posted, and they may not be tied to trees or plants or left unattended.

As the country’s largest national seashore, visitors will find an abundance of recreational and educational activities here. There are interpretive programs, historic sites, sugar white beaches, and an abundance of flora, fauna and birdlife. Dogs are allowed in most areas of the park. They are not allowed on the beach on the Florida side; nor are they allowed on the federally designated wilderness islands, Horn or Petit Bois Islands, or the designated swim beach on West Ship Island on the Mississippi side. Dogs are not allowed in buildings, and they must be on no more than a 6 foot leash, and picked up after at all times. Dogs are not allowed to be left in cars.
