The Alaska Ferry, or Alaska Maritime Highway System connects Bellingham, Washington and Prince Rupert, BC with many Alaskan ports and also serves these Alaskan ports with Car, RV and passenger service. The ferry is essential, as many of the ports served are not accessible from the mainland by car, only by ferry or air. Dogs are allowed, but with significant restrictions. They must remain on the car deck at all times. If you have an RV or a car, this means that the dog must remain in the vehicle. If you are a foot passenger, you will have to leave your pet on the car deck in a closed kennel. You may not visit the car deck while the ferry is not in port. An exception is made for ferry segments greater than 8 hours, where they will hold occasional pet visits to the car deck to allow the dogs to relieve themselves. This is not much fun for the dogs, so we recommend that you stop often at intermediate ports with pets. In port, you may take your dog off of the ferry usually for about 20 minutes to 45 minutes. The ferry serves the Southeast area of Alaska, the Prince William Sound area, and Kodiak and points in the Aleutian Islands. The pet information is listed at http://www.dot.state.ak.us/amhs/pets.shtml.
