This is the oldest arboretum and botanical garden in the American Southwest. This 320 acre collection of deseart plants was founded in the 1920s. It is set at the foot of the Picketpost Mountain. The arboretum has two miles of walking path and is a place for children and adults to learn about our desert ecosystems. Highlights include the Heritage Rose Garden, the three acre Cactus Garden, Ayer Lake (no swimming), Magma Ridge with scenic vistas, the interpretive Herb Garden, the Eucalyptus Forest, and the two acre Demonstration Garden. The Arboretum is constantly voted "Best Day Trip" in polls from Phoenix and Tucson residents. This park is located about an hour from Phoenix and 90 minutes from north Tucson. It is at Highway 60 Milepost 223, about one hour east of Phoenix on the Superstition Freeway. From Tucson, take Highway 79 to Florence Junction and then go 12 miles east on Highway 60. Hours are daily from 8am to 4pm, except Christmas Day. Prices are $7.50 for adults, $3 for children 5 to 12 and free for children under 5 and for dogs. Pets are allowed but need to be leashed and cleaned up after. They are not allowed inside buildings.
