One of the city's architectural gems, the Holiday Inn Express Baltimore is easy on the eyes as well as the wallet. The classic landmark building is home to plenty of modern amenities. Once the headquarters of Old Town National Bank, this seven-story building dating from 1924 has charm to spare. There are plenty of old-fashioned architectural flourishes in the lobby, where two-story-tall Corinthian columns hold up an elegant coffered ceiling. The 68 rooms are bright and airy, flooded with sunlight from the tall windows. Free Wi-Fi is a nice amenity in every room, as are family-friendly conveniences like microwaves, mini-fridges and coffeemakers. Start off the day right with the complimentary breakfast buffet, which features the hotel's signature sticky-sweet cinnamon buns. There are also hot items every morning, ranging from scrambled eggs and bacon to biscuits and gravy. The staff is happy to pack a to-go box if you're hitting the road early. Cardio machines are available in the exercise room. North of the Inner Harbor, the Holiday Inn Express is a 15-minute walk from Baltimore Aquarium and a 20-minute walk from the Maryland Science Center. The Walter Art Museum, in the heart of the Mount Vernon cultural district, is 15 minutes northwest. Holiday Inn Express is 10 miles from Baltimore-Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport. A taxi gets you to Amtrak's Penn Station in six minutes. This historic hotel is quite a looker, but its ample amenities and extras make it a great bargain, too.
