Dedicating to preserving and educating the public about the canal era and America's transportation history, several visitor centers can be found along this 184½ mile long canal trail as well as various recreation opportunities. The trail goes from Georgetown in the District of Columbia to Cumberland, Maryland, and the park is also home to the 3,118 foot Paw Paw Tunnel that took more than 6 million bricks and 12 years to build. Dogs are allowed throughout the park and on the canal trail. Dogs must be under their owner's control, leashed, and cleaned up after at all times.
