This park has a long history as a defense lookout point for America, its home to the country's oldest operating lighthouse, and it is a year round recreational destination. Dogs are allowed on the ocean beaches except during the Piping Plover nesting season from March 15 through September 15. Dogs are not allowed at any time in the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge area. There is a dog beach area on the bay side of the park. Dogs must be under their owner's control, leashed, and cleaned up after at all times.
