In Memorial Park

Two sections of the actual Berlin Wall are located in Memorial Park, a downtown Rapid City park. The wall serves as a memorial to the Cold War. In 1993 the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology held an exhibit about the Berlin Wall. It stimulated such great interest that several people proposed that Rapid City, being in the shadow of Mt. Rushmore, should receive a few of the Berlin Wall sections. A local committe and contributions from two local benefactors helped to achieve this goal and in October of 1996, there was a dedication for the Berlin Wall segments that were placed in Memorial Park. When we visited this attraction we found a plaque next to the exhibit which stated: "This Berlin Wall segment, located between the Brandenburg Gate and Checkpoint Charlie from 1961 to 1989, is donated in honor of the citizens of Ratingen, Germany (the Sister City of Vermillion, South Dakota) and its mayor, Dr. Ernst Dietrich, who fostered democratic ideals and German American relations." The wall segments are located southwest of the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Other park amenities include picnic tables and restrooms. The park is located next to the Holiday Inn at 404 North Fifth Street. Leashed dogs are welcome at the park and you will need to clean up after your pet.
