This 59,000 acre refuge has the distinction of being a winter host to the last of the migrating whooping cranes, 390 bird species, and home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. Dogs are allowed in the refuge; they are not allowed in buildings, by the edge of the water, or where otherwise noted. Dogs must be short leashed and under owner's care at all times. Small dogs must be picked up and carried when walking by the alligator ponds and larger dogs should be under complete control.
