Designated a National Historic Landmark, this 1866 fort was established to protect travelers on the trail west, to try to keep peace among warring tribes, and to draw Indian forces away from the trans-continental railroad construction. The fort now offers an interpretive center, historical remains, and 3 picnic areas. Dogs are allowed on site; they are not allowed in the museum. Dogs must be leashed and under their owner's control at all times.
