Although created by the state in 1982 with a main function to perpetuate and protect the largest concentration of Bald Eagles in the world; it also acts to protect and sustain the natural salmon runs here. The preserve covers 48,000 acres of river bottom land and 20+ miles runs along the highway where there are pull-outs with interpretive signage and viewing pull-outs. The best time for viewing the eagles is in the fall, but the scenery is awesome at any time. Dogs are allowed; they must be kept leashed and cleaned up after.
