Lassen National Forest

Lassen National Forest Highways 44 and 89 Susanville, California
530-257-4188 Get Map or Directions
Within this forest watch prong-horn antelope, drive four-wheel trails into high granite country or discover spring wildflowers on foot. Dogs are allowed on leash in the park other than in the Subway Cave. In the past, dogs were allowed in the Subway Cave but they are not anymore. If you want to check out the lava tube take a self-guided tour of the Subway Cave. Someone will need to stay outside the cave entrance with the dog. There are a number of hiking trails around the cave area. Be sure to bring a flashlight, as there are no other sources of light underground. Subway Cave is located near the town of Old Station, 1/4 mile north of the junction of Highway 44 & 89 across from Cave Campground. The temperature inside the cave remains a cool 46 degrees F. year around. The cave is open late May through October and closed during the winter months. Or try a hike instead. Try the Spattercone Trail which explores the volcanic landscape and how life adapts to it. Three of the four kinds of volcanoes in the world can be seen along the Spattercone Trail. The trailhead and parking area are located at the Sanitary Dump Station across the highway form Hat Creek Campground on Highway 89 in Old Station. The trail has a round-trip distance of 1.5 miles. This trail is not shaded, so during the summer, try an early morning or late afternoon walk. For information about other miles of trails throughout this beautiful forest, stop by any National Forest Offices in Susanville including the Eagle Lake Ranger District Office located at 477-050 Eagle Lake Road in Susanville.
