Get Map or Directions
This is the place where James W. Marshall found some shining flecks of gold in the tailrace of a sawmill he was building for himself and John Sutter in 1848. This began the famous Gold Rush era. The park has a replica of the sawmill and a number of historic buildings. Gold Country Carriage operates frequently on Hwy 49 at this park and dogs are welcome to join their family on this horse and carriage ride (see Attractions). Dogs on leash are welcome at several trails near the river. They are allowed in the picnic areas, but not allowed in the hiking trails across the street from the river side. Throughout the year the park has many special events, and dogs are welcome at most of the outdoor events. The park is located in Coloma on Highway 49 between Placerville and Auburn. It is open year round from 8am to sunset. There is a minimal fee for parking and for dogs.
