Dogs on leash are allowed everywhere except at Lake Clementine. Located in the heart of the gold country, this recreation area covers over 35,000 acres along 40 miles of the North and Middle Forks of the American River. Major recreational uses include hiking, swimming, boating, fishing, camping, mountain biking, gold panning and off-highway motorcycle riding. One of the more popular trails is the Western States National Recreation Trail. It hosts the Tevis Cup Endurance Ride and Western States100 Endurance Run each summer. The park is located south of Interstate 80, stretching from Auburn to Colfax. The main access is from Auburn, either on Highway 49 or the Auburn-Foresthill Road.
