Get Map or Directions
This trail crosses the dog-friendly Devil's Postpile National Monument. The John Muir Trail offers miles of hiking trails. Dogs must be on leash at the monument but can be off leash under direct voice control in the Inyo National Forest and Ansel Adams Wilderness. The trailhead is located near the ranger's station at the monument. To get there, you can drive directly to the monument and trailhead ONLY if you have a camping permit or a vehicle with 11 people or more. All day visitors must ride a shuttle bus from the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area at the end of Highway 203. Well-behaved leashed dogs are allowed on the bus. From Highway 395, drive 10 miles west on Highway 203 to Minaret Summit. Then drive 7 miles on a paved, narrow mountain road. Or take the shuttle bus at the end of Highway 203. The bus ride takes about 45 minutes to the monument with several stops along the way.
