Are Dogs Allowed in Home Depot?

If you’ve got some home improvement to do, odds are you’re going to Home Depot. And anytime you’re doing a little DIY, it’s fun to have a furry companion. But are dogs allowed in Home Depot?

Home Depot’s Pet Policy

Unfortunately, Home Depot’s pet policy can be elusive. If you have a service dog, your pup should be allowed in every Home Depot location, in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. However, if your pet is not a service animal, the rules are not exactly clear.

Home Depot does not outline a pet policy on its website. Most users report that their local store allows pets, as long as they are well-behaved. Some stores require leashes. Other stores ask that you do not put your pet inside the shopping cart.

The best way to know if your local Home Depot allows pets is to call. You can always use their store finder if you need help locating your local store.

Is my service dog allowed in Costco?

Yes, all service animals are allowed in Costco. If you’re unsure if your pet qualifies as a service animal, the ADA provides a helpful definition: a service dog is “a dog that has been individually trained to do work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability.” Your service animal does not have to wear a vest, ID, or other identifying information. Your dog does not have to be registered to qualify as a service animal.

There is a chance that Home Depot employees may stop you and ask about your service animal. Employees can ask two questions: 1) Is your dog a service animal? 2) What tasks does your dog perform as related to your disability? Employees can not ask you to provide documentation, ask your dog to demonstrate tasks, or question you further about your disability—these constitute ADA violations.

If your pet is not a service animal and your local Home Depot does not allow pet dogs, please do not try to bend the rules. Many Americans rely on service animals to go about their daily lives. To pass off a pet as a service animal can create distrust towards the people who need them and make the lives of disabled people harder.

So can I bring my dog to Home Depot?

Odds are your local Home Depot allows you to bring your pup. However, it’s best to make a quick call before you leave—it’d be a shame to have to turn around, or worse, leave your dog in a hot car.
