Dogs, by nature, are carnivorous animals, so it might seem natural to offer your pup a slice of bacon. While bacon poses no toxic threats to dogs, most veterinarians still wouldn’t recommend you feed your pup it.
What Happens if a Dog Eats Bacon?
Since bacon is incredibly fatty and high in salt content, it’s generally considered unhealthy and potentially harmful for a dog’s digestive tract. Eating a large amount, according to the American Kennel Club, could even cause pancreatitis – inflammation of the pancreas – which can be fatal. If your pup accidentally snatches a piece from your plate, then he should be fine, but if he eats an excess amount, we recommend contacting your veterinarian.
If you’re looking for a protein to feed your dog, a good alternative to bacon or other pork products is plain, cooked chicken or salmon.
