You’re making a sandwich and feel your pup staring you down. You’re tempted to throw him a slice of the ham you’re about to eat…but should you? Though it won’t be toxic, most vets agree that you should not let your dog eat ham.
What Happens if a Dog Eats Ham?
According to the American Kennel Club, store-bought ham contains a great deal of sodium due to the preservatives being loaded with nitrates and nitrites. In addition to the sodium, many people disagree with how easily digestible ham is for dogs. Generally, though, it’s not considered to be the healthiest protein to offer your pooch. That’s because ham has a higher fat content compared to other proteins, which is also a reason for why it could be so difficult for your dog to digest. While it’s probably okay if your dog eats a little every once in a while, it’s not recommended for him to eat it frequently or in large amounts.
