This healthy, crunchy salad staple is perfectly safe for pups to eat…in moderation. Since lettuce – including romaine, arugula, and iceberg – is 90 percent water, there are minimal risks involved with sneaking your pup a few pieces. If you’re considering feeding your pup spinach, however, we suggest learning more about it here first.
Can Lettuce Upset a Dog’s Stomach?
Moderation is the key to introducing any new food into your dog’s diet, and the same goes for lettuce. While lettuce is in no way toxic for your furry friend, there are some risks involved. If your pup is overfed lettuce or fed it too frequently, he could end up having diarrhea due to the high fiber content. Additionally, lettuce could be hard for your dog to digest if it isn’t cut up into smaller pieces first.
Just because lettuce is safe to eat, however, doesn’t mean that other salad ingredients are. Onions, for example, can be toxic to dogs. If you have any questions about adding small amounts of lettuce to your dog’s diet, we recommend contacting your veterinarian.
