Can Dogs Eat Quinoa?

Quinoa has grown in popularity over recent years, known best for its nutritional profile, standing out amongst other grains. So can this calcium and protein packed food be given to our dogs? Yes!

Like with any new foods, it’s important to introduce quinoa to your pup in small amounts and to notice his behavior afterward. If you notice any vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation, you should refrain from feeding your dog this healthy grain. Additionally, when you’re cooking quinoa, you should be sure that it isn’t cooked with any oil, garlic, or onions, as these ingredients can prove harmful and even toxic for your dog.

What About Saponin?

Some may be concerned about the natural chemical, saponin, produced by the quinoa plant to protect itself from insects. It’s said that this chemical could be irritable for dog and human digestive tracts. However, the amount of saponin typically found in quinoa is too small to create any health issues. If you’re concerned, though, washing the quinoa before you cook it should remove most of it.
