Can Dogs Eat Sausage?

While it is not recommended that you let your pup eat pork sausage – which is high in fat and salt content – if your pup sneaks a slice from the cutting board, she should be fine. Oftentimes, sausage is processed with seasonings that may be harmful to your pup’s digestive tract, sometimes even extremely so, like with garlic and onion powder. If the meat is undercooked or contaminated, it could also put your dog at risk for a parasitic infection called Trichinosis.

What Happens if My Dog Eats Sausage?

If you notice your dog has possibly eaten sausage, watch for nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and loss of appetite, as these could all serve as indicators of your dog trying to flush out her system.

If you notice these symptoms to a concerning amount, we recommend contacting your veterinarian for further guidance. And if you’re looking for a protein substitute, we recommend feeding your pup a small amount of unseasoned chicken or chicken sausage.
