Ruston Louisiana: Furry Fun Walk

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Ruston Parks and Recreation Department has hosted the Furry Fun Walk for the past three years. Well, we are now on our 4th event and it is set for Saturday, March 20th at 9:00am. The community is encouraged to come out, with their dog on a leash, for a one mile noncompetitive stroll. After the walk, we will all gather in the “Barking Lot” which will be made up of several local pet vendors and services, veterinarians and plenty of giveaways. The City of Ruston’s K-9 unit will be on hand to demonstration their searching abilities. Additionally, Sparky, the Fire Department mascot dog and the Louisiana Tech Bulldog mascot named Tech XX will be making the one mile walk with us. The morning is dedicated to getting outside and exercising with your furry friend as well as raising awareness about adopting from our local non-profit shelters, 4 Paws Rescue, Inc and PAWSNELA.

We are trying to raise awareness about green, wholesome, safe and organic products for pets.

I would love the opportunity to put your brochures or samples in each participant’s goodie bag, or please consider something pet-friendly for our raffle. In the past events, we have received donations from Natura Pet, Organic Pet SuperFoods, Overby Farms, NUPRO, Sporn, Beefeaters, Petsakes, Bark Magazine, NutriSource, Platinum Performance, Olive Green Goods, Waggers,,, Nylabone, Nzymes, Diamond Pet, US Bones, Sojos, Nutri-Vet, LLC., Blue Dog Bakery and Etta Says, just to name a few. Anything you can do would be greatly appreciated.

We also hosted our first K-9 Pool Party last August and we look forward to hosting it again this August on the 7th at 8th.

Santa Cruz California: Repeal the Dog Ban

Monday, March 8th, 2010

For many years, Santa Cruz downtown has had a dubious distinction – No Dogs allowed. This is on the sidewalks, in the stores, at the cafes and patios. Everywhere. As one of only a handful of cities with such an ordinance the time has come to repeal this law. With arguably the most dog-friendly city in America, Carmel, less than a 1 hour drive from Santa Cruz, this law has been a money loser and serves no useful purpose. Now there is an effort to overturn the dog ban. We ourselves have driven right by Santa Cruz to Monterey or Carmel due to this policy which blights an otherwise dog-friendly area. Anyone who is interested in this issue, please see the attached Santa Cruz Sentinel article for more information:

UPDATE – July 20, 2011 – The Santa Cruz City Council voted 4-2 to allow dogs in downtown starting by Sept 1, 2011 – see updated story
