Traveling with a Pet On Amtrak

amtrakpetDogs and cats up to 20 pounds are now allowed to travel with you on certain United States Amtrak routes. There are certain restrictions, however. Only certain train routes allow pets. Pets travel is restricted to routes under 7 hours long. There is a maximum of five pets per train and it is first come first serve with regard to buying pet tickets. So you should make your reservation as soon as possible. A passenger may only take one pet. There is a $25 pet fee for each travel segment. In the event of a service disruption, Amtrak will try to make accommodations at a pet-friendly hotel but will not guarantee that they can. The dog must remain in a pet carrier at all times on the train. The pet carrier counts as one of your pieces of baggage allowed.

At check-in at the station you must arrive 30 minutes before departure to allow the staff to verify eligibility of your pet. They will verify the size and weight, see that the pet is not distruptive such as non-stop barking or growling and have you sign a pet document. The pet must be at least 8 weeks old. You will need to certify that your pet is up to date on vaccinations.

Pets may not be shipped on Amtrak or checked as baggage. They must travel with a person.
