Important Issues Discussed at 5th Annual International Greyhound Welfare Conference

Monday, September 12th, 2011

Event Hosted by American-European Greyhound Alliance & Greyhound Friends Inc.

Leading members of the International greyhound welfare community met on July 30-31 in Hopkinton, MA at the 5th Annual International Greyhound Welfare Conference. Current issues related to Greyhound, lurcher and Spanish Galgos situations around the world were discussed.

Medical research advances, political lobbying, fund-raising and media development were covered during presentations given by participants from Ireland, Spain, The United Kingdom, Canada and The United States. Updates were given on current issues such as the decline of greyhound racing in the United States and the UK and the subsequent repercussions on the greyhounds were as well as an overview of the current international situation including a dialogue on the recently defeated plans for Irish racing greyhounds to be exported to China. Concerns about the expansion of racing to Asia and South America were also discussed. The free event was open to the public.

“Traditional markets for racing greyhounds such as the U.S. and U.K are dwindling,” said Louise Coleman, president of Greyhound Friends and the American-European Greyhound Alliance. “This raises concern for the export of greyhounds to countries without animal welfare legislation or regulations including countries in Asia and South America.”

Event participants included Coleman, Michelle Scott, Indiana, USA; John Mottern, AEGA, USA; Jennifer Watkins, Shamrock Greyhound Placement, Kentucky, USA; Diane Ward, Scooby North America, Scooby Spain; Bernie Wright, Greyhound Action Ireland, Irene Blanquez from Spain and guest speaker Michael McCann from Massachusetts.

Red Star Team Deploys to Flood-Damaged Minot, N.D.

Saturday, August 20th, 2011

The Souris River in North Dakota rose to record heights this summer, severely flooding the city of Minot. Last week, the Red Star™ Animal Emergency Services team headed there to help shelter more than 300 displaced animals. About one in every four Minot residents had to evacuate. For more than a month, they’ve been living in friends’ homes, temporary shelters, even open campsites. Many of them will never be able to return to their homes — which gives their pets an uncertain future. The Red Star team will help make sure the animals get what they need: shelter, food and a little bit of love.
