Dog Friendly in San Antonio, Texas

San Antonio Texas is the state's most popular tourist destination. And why not? It's the city with the most history in the state. It is also beautiful. The Riverwalk is a not to be missed tourist site. The Alamo? Enough said. This territory was controlled by the Comanche Indians before Mission San Antonio de Valero was founded in 1718. This mission was converted into a military outpost named The Alamo. During the Texas Revolution the Alamo played a historic role. The center of modern San Antonio is the Riverwalk, in downtown. The historic sites are within a few blocks of the Riverwalk as are most of the large downtown hotels. Over the last ten years, San Antonio has grown more and more dog-friendly and is now a top dog-friendly destination in the nation.

The River Walk is a shaded walkway along the San Antonio River where there are shops, restaurants and boat rides among other activities. Most people like to walk on the Riverwalk and just see what there is to do. Your leashed, well-behaved and controlled dog is welcome to walk with you on the Riverwalk. The Riverwalk is crowded, and your dog should be used to crowds before they are brought here. Also, please see that they have already "done their business" before bringing them here. There are lots of patio restaurants on the Riverwalk but only a few are dog-friendly. For Riverwalk dog-friendly restaurants try Bella on the River at 106 River Walk Street or Charlie Wants a Burger at 223 Losoya Street. For some other dog-friendly dining try The Friendly Spot at 943 S. Alamo Street or Los Pitios at 2015 Northeast Loop. This restaurant was given the first "dog permit" when restaurants were authorized to allow dogs in San Antonio.

For pet-friendly hotels near the Riverwalk try the Drury Plaza Hotel Riverwalk, the Hotel Indigo San Antonio Riverwalk or the Westin Riverwalk for dogs up to 50 pounds. Also pet-friendly with a pet package is the Hotel Contessa at 306 West Market Street. San Antonio has pet-friendly hotels from most of the chains including La Quinta, Drury, Motel 6 and Choice Hotels. They are in various parts of town and the Six Flags area. For people with pets who want more space, want to stay awhile or want to cook for themselves there are a number of pet-friendly extended stay hotels in San Antonio. There are also some pet-friendly vacation rentals in town, including on the Riverwalk. If you are camping in San Antonio there is the San Antonio KOA and the Jellystone Park is recommended if you have children with you. For an experience just out of town there is the Mermaids Cove & Sculpture Ranch Campground in Canyon Lake. There are a lot of outdoor activities here and dogs are also welcome in their cabins and lodge.

While in San Antonio you will want to see some of the major attractions the city has to offer. The Alamo is the center of it all. Dogs cannot take the Alamo tour but they can get very close to the building. You can rotate holding the dog for the short Alamo tour. Dogs are welcome throughout (inside and out) the Texas Transportation Museum at 11731 Wetmore Road. For a historic and informative tour of downtown the Yellow Rose Carriage Company will take you, your family and your dog on various tours. There is also a dog-friendly ghost tour. Dogs are allowed on the grounds of the San Antonio Missions National Historic Park. There is much to see and some walking to do there. For shopping an old style outdoor market, take your leashed dog to Market Square - El Mercado. The Westover Marketplace, an open air shopping center, also allows leashed dogs. Dogs are not allowed inside Six Flags Fiesta Texas or Sea World but both have day kennels on the premises.

For hiking with your dog there is the Guadalupe River State Park with 4 miles of river frontage, an equestrian trail and other trails. Dogs are also allowed on leash at urban parks such as Brackenridge Park, Calaveras Park and McAllister Park. There are a number of fenced dog parks throughout town for off-leash play.

Near San Antonio are dog-friendly destinations Houston and Austin.
