Big Water Trail
This Wasatch-Cache National Forest trail is located in Mill Creek Canyon. It is a 3 mile trail, rated easy, and takes about 2 hours one way. The trail starts at an elevation of 7600 feet and climbs 1240 feet up to an elevation of 8840 feet. The trail leads up to Dog Lake, which is a popular destination. Please note that while dogs are allowed on the trail, they are not allowed in Big Cottonwood Canyon which is just past Dog Lake. These rules are strictly enforced by many Salt Lake City agencies including the Sheriff’s Office. On the trail, dogs must be leashed on EVEN numbered calendar days. On ODD numbered days, dogs are permitted off-leash on the trail. Dogs still need to be leashed at all times in developed sites which include parking lots, trailheads, picnic sites, campgrounds and cabins. This is also a popular trail for mountain biking but no biking is permitted on ODD numbered days. Please remember to pick up after your dog. The trail is located southeast of downtown Salt Lake City. Take I-80 east heading out of Salt Lake City. Take Highway 215 south and exit at Mill Creek Canyon Road (3800 South Wasatch Blvd). Head east towards the mountains. Drive about 9.1 miles up the canyon to the parking lot. Please note that the upper parking lots can fill up quickly on the weekends.
