Rideau Canal and Trail
America’s oldest operating 19th-century canal was considered a major engineering feat of its time with 24 dams/46 locks, and it is now listed as a World Heritage Site. It connects numerous waterways to form a nonstop flow of water from Kingston to Ottawa, and in winter it becomes the longest ice skating rink in the world. Plus, there is a wonderful pathway that follows alongside for about 8 Km and affords visitors a unique view of times gone by and the area’s growth to modern times. Picnic areas and the villages and towns along the way each offers their own special amenities. Leashed dogs are allowed at the parks, the canal, on the trail, and stops along the way.
